A Chinese Brown Glazed Martaban Storage Jar, Ming Dynasty, 17th Century Description: Impressed Circular Pattern, covered overall in a brown glaze. Martaban jars are named after the port of Martaban (now Mottama) in Myanmar, a key trading hub where these jars were traded. They were traditionally used for storing and transporting goods such as wine, food, and other liquids. The jars have a rich history, with mentions by travelers as early as the 14th century and production dating back to the Ming Dynasty. In some cultures, particularly in parts of Indonesia and the Philippines, these jars were highly valued and were even believed to have spiritual or magical properties.
