About the Item

Charming blue and gray vintage studio pottery crock made by noted American folk potter David Eldreth in Nottingham, Pennsylvania, dated 1996. This wheel-thrown stoneware vessel features a classic salt-glazed exterior and a hand-decorated cobalt blue bird motif, a design element frequently found in Eldreth’s work and rendered here in his signature freehand slip-trailing style. The stylized bird, both playful and symbolic, reflects Eldreth’s deep engagement with 19th-century American folk art traditions while maintaining a distinctly contemporary, expressive hand. The interior is finished with a smooth, glossy glaze, and the gently flared rim is accented with a minimally raised cobalt blue leaf band motif, adding visual rhythm and balance to the form. The base is clearly inscribed “David Eldreth, Nottingham, PA, 1996,” with an impressed maker's mark A wonderful example of late 20th-century American studio pottery that bridges functional form and decorative folk art sensibility.
