About the Item
Traditional covered pot from Provençal folklore that Picault frequently revisits in the first part of his work.
The signature "Picault" in extenso makes it easy to date this piece before 1960, the date from which the signature "RP" will be the rule.
The pot has a crack visible on the last photo.
From decorative culinary pottery to major artistical pieces, Robert Picault is probably one of the most popular ceramicists from Vallauris.
Gold medalist at the Milan’s Triennale in 1953, most of his creations is easily recognisable by the use of drawings with copper or iron oxide dried on a white underglaze.

Robert Picault
Robert Picault was born in Paris. After studying ceramics at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Paris, he moved to Vallauris at the end of World War Two. Here, with Roger Capron, he founded the Atelier Callis in 1946. Two years later, he set up his own pottery in the Chemin du Fournas in the village. He was a friend, colleague and next-door-neighbour to Pablo Picasso, and the two learnt from each other aspects of the other's specialities. Picault was also an accomplished cinematographer and photographer, and made a series of four short films with Picasso and leading show-business personalities of the 1950s. He used copper oxide and iron oxide in his glazes, and the bulk of his work is characterized by green and brown geometric motifs consisting of noughts and crosses, bands and waves.

French ceramist in Vallauris
Robert Picault has contributed to the revival of culinary ceramics by updating traditional local forms decorated with lines and geometric designs.
His identity style has been a great success and continues to decorate the table today. His personal pieces are sought after by art collectors.
A former student of the School of Applied Arts in Paris, Robert Picault arrived in Vallauris in 1946. He created with his school friends Roger Capron (1922-2006) and Jean Derval (1925-2010), the Callis workshop.
In this village of a hundred potters, they met the neighboring ceramists André Baud, the 4 potters and among others the Madoura workshop, where he frequented the famous painter Picasso from 1949 to 1955. He also became friends with Jean Cocteau, Fernand Léger, Louis Aragon and Elsa Triolet.
