About the Item
Late 18th century Italian Majolica Polychrome Pharmacy Jar or Albarello, dated 1777. These jars were use in apothecaries to hold medicinal herbs, powders, and other substances for healing. The Albarello is a type of ceramic container popular in Italy from the Renaissance period onward. Majolica refers to the type of tin-glazed pottery that originated in Italy. The ceramic is covered in opaque white glaze, serving as a canvas for vibrant polychrome (multicolored) decoration. Jar is decorated in flowers and fauna in colors of green, yellow, blue and red. The jar shape is cylindrical, with slightly flared rim. Back of jar has Roman numeral date as 1777, with Latin wording. Weighs 8.25lbs. The combination of vivid, detailed decorations and its functional use as a pharmaceutical container offers a fascinating insight into the history of both art and medicine.
