About the Item

This is a very old Japanese pottery. It is thought to date from approximately the 10th century to the 14th century. There is ink writing on the bottom of the jar, but the excavation location is Manabe Town, Ibaraki Prefecture. It is a small town in the south of Ibaraki Prefecture, and it is written that it was excavated here. This is an earthenware pottery called "sueki" in Japan. It first started being made in the Sue village of Osaka, and it came to be called sueki. (ki=meaning of vessel) Throughout Japanese history, soft unglazed earthenware was fired at low temperatures, but around the 4th century, with the development of kiln technology, it began to be fired at high temperatures. Fired at high temperatures, the pottery becomes harder and less likely to break. The color is light gray pottery. This is a technique introduced from the Korean Peninsula. There are items with designs similar to those of the Korean peninsula, There are also items made to imitate Chinese bronze ware. Sueki, which was born in Osaka, gradually began to be made in various parts of Japan. This item was made around the last time when Sue ware was developed. Normally, it should be baked hard, but because the firing temperature in the kiln was not very high, this earthenware was fired a little soft. Therefore, if it is buried in the soil for many years, the surface will deteriorate and it will look like the image. However, it has a wabi-sabi atmosphere. Additionally, the surface has a mesh pattern all over it, which is the result of hitting the surface of the jar with a board carved into a mesh pattern to create the pattern. Also, since a similar item was published in an art book, I have included a photo of it as a reference. Regarding the condition of this pot, the rim of the mouth has been repaired. There are also some thin cracks around the mouth, which is a common condition in earthenware. Don't worry, you don't have to worry about it breaking. There are no other major scratches, and it appears to be in relatively good condition. However, it is a very old item. If you put water in this, it will stain, so if you want to display flowers, please fill another container with water and put it in this jar. It is stored in a special wooden box. Weight: 2.65kg
