About the Item
A Japanese black polychromed porcelain ginger jar. Handcrafted towards the end of the 19th century during the Meiji period in Japan.
The jar features an elongated ovoid-shaped body, and is decorated in a chinoiserie style, and adorned with Japanese symbolism... Encircling the body of the ginger jar are two green pheasants perched below a sakura cherry blossom tree, surrounded by blooming peony flowers and foliage.
The composition showcases pastel hues of green and blue for the foliage and washes of pink for the peony flowers. The pheasants are depicted in a rich green hue, all set against a shiny jet-black enamel background , which gives a sense of luminosity to the wonderful selection of colours and hues.
The base and neck of the ginger jar are decorated with a border of mint green and blue foliage and gold hand-painted rings, encircling the round body and framing the figural scene.
This decorative ginger jar is unsigned, however it is easily identifiable as an early Yamatoku piece… Yamatoku is a kiln, situated in the Saga prefecture in Japan, notable for their bold use of colour and soft, graphic-like illustrations that beautifully adorn their porcelain pieces.
The ginger jar comes in very good condition for its age and use, with only some minor wear to the enamel on the body
