About the Item

Joseon vases and pots are best known for their gorgeous white porcelain and white blue-and-white designs. These ceramics, produced for royalty and aristocracy, captivated many with their well-proportioned shapes and sophisticated paintings. However, there are also many simple yet powerful pieces of pottery produced for everyday use by commoners and locals. The pot we are introducing today embodies this folk-based aesthetic, the spirit of "folk art." This amber-glazed pot, produced around the 18th or 19th century during the late Joseon Dynasty, fully conveys the charm of traditional Korean pottery. This piece is coated with an iron-rich amber glaze, giving it a lustrous, rich brown color. Its appearance changes depending on the angle and lighting, creating a landscape of depth and dimension. The natural movement of the glaze during firing is another highlight, giving the piece a natural beauty despite being a craft. The body of the vase features twelve beveled edges, creating a refined and serene impression. The technology required to create such polyhedral shapes on vases and pots was highly advanced at the time, and the design is both practical and decorative. It is also noteworthy that the lid remains intact. While the lids of many similar vessels have been lost, this piece's lid remains intact and blends beautifully with the vase itself. Furthermore, the shoulders and surface of the lid are decorated with intaglio vine motifs, adding a subtle yet delicate beauty. These designs are a testament to the meticulous handiwork of the artisans of the time. At approximately 20.6 cm in diameter and 22 cm in height, and weighing approximately 2.45 kg, the vase is relatively compact and easy to handle, yet it exudes presence. We poured about half the vessel inside with water, but no leakage was detected, making it suitable for use as a flower vase. The vessel is in excellent condition, with no major defects or cracks. Despite its age, the glaze is in excellent condition, and its beauty has deepened with age. We have also included photos of art books featuring similar candy-glazed vases for reference, so please take a look. It comes with a dedicated wooden display case. Simply displaying it brings a tranquil presence to any space, evoking the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi. Enjoy this quiet yet powerful form of beauty born from the everyday lives of the people in your own home.
