About the Item
A decorative pair of Japanese cloisonné enamel vases dating to the Meiji period, each measuring approximately 9 inches in height. The vases are finely worked in polychrome enamels on a light cream ground and display a well balanced arrangement of phoenix birds, floral sprays, scrolling vines, and auspicious motifs set within shaped panel reserves.
The bodies are decorated with alternating shield form panels featuring phoenix birds in motion among flowering branches, symbolic medallions, and stylized cloud scrolls. The shoulders are enriched with a deep red ground overlaid with blossoming flowers and scrolling foliage, creating strong contrast against the lighter body. The necks feature turquoise blue cartouches with gilt highlighted scrolling designs and are fitted with applied loop handles decorated with floral enamel work. The rims and interiors are finished in gilt, and the bases are similarly decorated with foliate motifs.
Condition is good overall, consistent with age and use. There is general surface wear and light enamel rubbing, along with small hairline cracks visible in places. One vase shows a loss to one applied handle, while the remaining handles are intact. No major restorations are observed, and the enamels retain strong color and decorative appeal.
A handsome and decorative pair of Japanese cloisonné vases, representative of Meiji period production and well suited for collectors of Japanese decorative arts or for refined interior display.
