About the Item

This striking pair of late 19th century faience pitchers is a superb example of the Renaissance revival style produced by the esteemed Faïencerie de Gien. Each piece is beautifully hand-painted with intricate grotesque decorations, fantastical creatures, winged putti and scrolling motifs inspired by 16th century Italian maiolica. At the center of each pitcher, a vivid medallion in deep cobalt blue frames a finely rendered mythological cherub, crowned above by an ornate crest that enhances the sense of grandeur. The palette, rich golds, lapis blues, soft greens and warm ochres, is typical of Gien’s most elaborate historicist creations. The rounded body, elegant handle and generous foot give the pitchers a sculptural presence, making them equally impressive as decorative objects or functional vessels. Both pitchers bear the Gien factory mark used between 1875 and 1900, confirming their authenticity and period. Their exceptional condition, vibrant colors and fully hand-painted details make them an outstanding addition to any collection of French faience, Renaissance-inspired ceramics, or 19th-century decorative arts.
