About the Item

Pre-Columbian Earthenware Incensario, El Chanal, Colima, Western Mexico A large incense burner/brazier depicting the rain god Tlaloc from the El Chanal area in Colima. This would be placed in an altar or temple, with a tray of burning coals and incense placed inside the column or on the top. There are a few repaired areas on the upper tray but the entire piece is solid. A very similar example is in the Walters Art Museum, MD. It measures 14 high by 9.5 inches in diameter (35.5 by 24 cm) Ex. private collection, Northern CA, ex. collection UCLA Archaeologist, 1950s-70s
