About the Item

Here is a wonderful and rare glazed ceramic stoppered bottle or jar by Primavera (Atelier d'Art du Printemps) and attributed to Colette Gueden (1905-2000). We believe this unique piece was made in the 1930s, possibly even the late 1920s. The underside of the jar is signed Primavera. In good condition with typical wear commensurate with age and use. About Primavera and Colette Gueden: Primavera was created in 1912 by René Guilleré, founder the of the Society of Decorative Artists, and Pierre Laguionie, the manager of Le Printemps, the Parisian department store, as the store’s design firm. Its name, meaning “Spring” in Latin, was a play on the store’s own, which means the same in French, and its stated mission was to make modern decorative objects—objects of beauty—more accessible to a growing middle class. Before its creation, no large-scale department store in Paris had bothered creating its own lines. Colette Gueden was born in Indochina in 1905. She studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Saint-Etienne, France and graduated in 1928. She began working as a designer for Primavera in 1927 progressing to a managerial role in 1934 and director in 1938. In addition to ceramics, she also created furniture, jewelry, and wallpapers.
