A striking trio of 19th-century handmade stoneware jugs from Southern Germany, each with its own distinct character, glaze tone, and form. Likely originating from Bavarian or Swabian village potteries, these jugs reflect the rustic elegance of utilitarian ceramic art.
Each piece was wheel-thrown, glazed, and kiln-fired with visible marks of time, use, and process—showcasing the authentic charm of vernacular craftsmanship. Together, they form a sculptural group rich in patina and presence.
Perfect as a curated decorative ensemble on a console, in a fireplace niche, or as a statement in a wabi-sabi or minimalist setting.
🟡 Jug 1 – Light Yellow / Ash Brown – Early 19th Century
This rare jug features a light yellow to ash-brown glaze with natural variation and surface depth—likely the result of wood-fired kiln firing. The glaze appears to have formed organically, with flowing, uneven tones and traces of ash melt, giving it a raw and earthy elegance.
Its rounded body and upright neck are complemented by a hand-applied strap handle. The unglazed base shows clear signs of kiln contact and firing residue, reinforcing its early 19th-century origin. A sculptural and soulful piece, rich in patina and presence.
🟤 Jug 2 – Matte Red-Brown – Mid 19th Century
Subtle and refined, this jug is coated in a warm, matte red-brown glaze that reads almost leathery in tone. The finish is soft and restrained, with slight tonal variation and surface irregularities that reflect the artisanal nature of its making.
The jug has a compact, rounded form with a short neck and a modest handle. The base is textured with a fine sandy finish typical of mid-19th century village pottery from Southern Germany or the Alsace region. Understated yet full of character, it suits interiors with a natural or minimalist palette.
🟤 Jug 3 – Glossy Dark Brown – Late 19th / c. 1900
The most commanding piece in the set, this large jug features a deep, glossy brown glaze with even coverage and subtle reflective qualities. The form is bold, with a broad belly and wide base, making it ideal as a sculptural centerpiece.
Though likely made closer to 1900, the jug retains its handmade quality, evident in slight asymmetries and its rough, unglazed base. Its generous scale and elegant finish make it well-suited to architectural spaces, gallery walls, or interiors seeking a strong but timeless statement.

Set of Three Antique Dutch/Flemish Herring Barrels with Original Inscriptions, Late 19th Century
A rare set of three antique wooden herring barrels (haringtonnen), originating from the Netherlands or Flanders, late 19th century. These charming folk art barrels were traditionally used in fish shops and village groceries to store and sell salted herring.
Each barrel is made of wooden staves bound with wooden hoops and comes with its original removable lid. Remnants of hand-painted inscriptions and price markings remain visible, including “18 centen den ½ kilo” (18 cents per half kilo), referring to the historical retail price of herring. The barrels show a rich patina and authentic wear consistent with use and age.
Such early shop fittings and objects of everyday folk culture are increasingly rare and today make wonderful decorative accents. Perfect for collectors of maritime antiques, rustic interiors, and antique kitchenalia.
