Small antique Japanese pottery vase/14th to 15th century/"Shigaraki ware"

About the Item

It is "Shigaraki ware". Shigaraki is a historical kiln located in Shiga Prefecture, Japan. (Shigaraki Kiln is marked with a red circle on the map.) It is said to have originated in the 8th century. In Japan, there are 6 historical kilns that are still in operation. One of them. And this is a Jar made around the 14th century. It is thought to have been made around the early Muromachi period, which is older than the Edo period. Also, as a reference, a similar item from the same era as this item was listed in the Japanese art book "Shigaraki Ware Masterpiece Illustrated Guide," so I have attached a photo. As for the condition of the item, it seems that the upper mouth part was probably intentionally chipped. It seems that the upper part needed to be broken for some purpose. And there is an "X" mark, which is probably a mark made in a later period. I don't know what it means. Furthermore, many Shigaraki ware jars made before the 14th century have a biscuit texture that is close to bisque, and this jar also has that type of texture. The baked color is gray or dark brown, which gives it a nice wabi-sabi feel. There are some cracks, but there is no need to worry about it breaking. Also, if you put water in this, it will leak from the bottom, so if you want to decorate it with flowers, fill another container with water and place it inside the vases. Shigaraki ware vases with this type of feel are quite rare. The most common color is a brown baked skin. This is a subdued color, and I think it will blend in well if placed in an inorganic or monochrome space. A highly recommended item!
