Victorian Flow Blue and Gilded Ceramic Jug with Pewter Lid, England, circa 1850
A decorative mid-19th century English ceramic jug, finely decorated in the Flow Blue tradition with scrolling foliate motifs and hand-applied gilt highlights. The elegant baluster form features relief-moulded grapevine ornamentation around the handle and shoulders, adding depth and texture to the piece.
Retaining its original pewter-mounted hinged lid, this jug was likely used for milk or cream at the Victorian breakfast table. The body displays a luminous pale blue glaze with cobalt decoration intentionally diffused in the firing process—characteristic of the Flow Blue technique that became immensely popular in Britain and for export to America during the 1840s–1860s.
Attributed to the Staffordshire potteries, the piece is unmarked but stylistically related to wares by Samuel Alcock or J.
G. Meakin.

Condition:
In good antique condition with minor wear to the gilt, fine glaze crazing throughout, and a small chip to the foot rim (as photographed). The pewter lid shows natural patination and remains securely hinged.
