About the Item

Finest Viennese Enamel Work from around 1870: Silver vessel on an oval plan, with a large, offset, domed foot, baluster-shaped body with a large, broad spout, on the back a siren holding onto the edge of the mouth, moulded in full relief and partly painted with coloured enamel, crowned by a snake whose raised and downward-curving and outward-curling tail forms the lower connection of a handle; the outer side of the vessel wall is divided into 16 picture segments by delicate relief bands, on which Old Testament scenes are depicted in the finest red monochrome painting, with spiral arabesque decoration in between; the spout and the underside of the foot are also decorated with the finest designs; the remaining silver areas are gilded.
