This medium Turkish jug was used to store olive oil by generations of families in the Levant. The barrel-shaped body and small opening at the neck minimize exposure to air, light, and heat, keeping the quality of the oil over time. Olive oil has long been a staple in Turkish pantries, and has brought great economic prosperity to Anatolia.
From storing abundance to preserving the flavor that marks most Turkish meals, these olive oil küps have held “liquid gold” for Anatolians for centuries. Today, this piece makes a stunning centerpiece or design anchor in the hallway, entryway, or garden of a modern home.
The Aydın region of Anatolia, which is located in western Turkey, has rich history of pottery making, dating back to ancient times. Aydın potters often involve hand-building methods (working with clay by hand using only simple tools) such as coiling, pinching, and slab construction, making this, quite literally, a handmade piece of Anatolian history.
