BACCARAT, Pair of Vases with Japonist Decoration of Flowering Trees and Birds
Located in SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, FR
This pair of vases with Japanese-style decoration was made by the Baccarat glasshouse around 1880. Founded under Louis XV, the French Baccarat crystal factory demonstrated its excellence at the Universal Exhibitions throughout the 19th century. The company created these square vases in black crystal resting on a bronze frame. These works are adorned with a natural, highly poetic decoration executed using the technique of hot enamelling in relief. The bright colours stand out clearly against the background, highlighting the meticulous attention to detail that went into this decoration. The black colour of hyalite crystal is obtained by injecting slag or sulphur into the glass. This dark background enhances the painted decoration. In this case, it was used to create a decoration in imitation of Chinese or Japanese lacquer...

There are 28 different type of sturgeon species. Sturgeons are native to subtropical, temperate and sub-Arctic rivers, lakes and coastlines of Eurasia and North America. Sturgeons are long-lived and can get very large, the largest sturgeon on record was a beluga female captured in the Volga Delta in 1827, measuring 7.2 m (23 ft 7 in). Several species of sturgeon are harvested for their roe, which is processed into the luxury food caviar like the beluga caviar. Beluga caviar is caviar consisting of the roe...
