By Gien
Located in New York, NY
A very rare signed pair of Faience vases produced by the prestigious French Gien factory, with a unique enameling technique called "Emaux chagrin" = painful enamels, because of the difficulty and time-consuming craftsmanship. The background consists of hand-applied enamel, a mixture of real gold, and chocolate brown colored clay. Then these museum pieces are hand decorated on both sides with gold leaf: antiquity decor with detailed armored knights...

Longwy Atelier Primavera Art Deco Turquoise Jardiniere
Located in Fort Lauderdale, FL
A brilliant turquoise Art Deco pottery jardinière made by the French faiencerie Longwy circa 1920. The jardiniere was part of a special line for the Atelier Primavera, the in-house design studio in the Paris department store Au Printemps. The atelier, created in 1912, aimed to provide affordable modern French design to middle-class consumers. It was the first time a Parisian magasin developed its own line of products. Primavera contracted production to craftsmen, designers, and manufactories, hence Longwy’s association with the studio. Primavera flourished in the Art Deco period, and Longwy’s Art Deco...

Fratelli Fanciullacci Majolica Vase with Relief Decor, Italy Mid Century
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Unusual vintage majolica vase with complex glaze in dark Bordeau oxblood red and various shades of grey colors features bands of applied reliefs in shape of abstract, graphic flowers. Top and bottom parts of the vase and bands of relief decor are decorated with gold. Monochromatic white glaze was used on inner surfaces, accentuating the palest grey shades in the main glaze. The vase is signed on the bottom with model number and "Italy"; while it does not have the usual the manufacturer's mark, "FF", the glaze that was used for this series is well documented to Fratelli Fanciullacci. It was common for Italian ceramics manufacturers to omit marking their pieces with their logos if the they were intended for American or European distributors; instead, they would only mark it "Italy" to allow the distributor to use their stickers, or rarely, they would mark the piece with "studio tame" for "distributor name" if the distributor did not object. Pieces from this particular series were made by Fratelli Fanciullacci with their own mark, for Ebeling Reuss...

Antique 19th Century Italian Maiolica Pot of the Renaissance Style
Located in Dallas, TX
Vivid colors, hand-painted in the Renaissance style, enhance this large maiolica pot from the 1800’s. Maiolica is tin-glazed pottery from Italy that has been decorated over a white background. This pot is considered an istoriato, which is to say that the pot has been decorated with figures, rather than strictly geometric patterns or floral designs. The maiolica does incorporate floral and foliate motifs, with white flowers that have yellow centers surrounded by blue rings. There are also yellow flowers that are depicted in various stages of nyctinasty (the closing of flowers during the night). The flora is all connected by a series of green and yellow curled leaves. Behind the vegetation is a dark blue background. There are two portraits inside large yellow cartouches that are painted in the middle of the pot. The first is a bearded man, dressed in a light brown tunic...
