About the Item

Decorate a mantel or console with this elegant set of three Vieux Paris porcelain vases. Crafted in Saint-Denis, France circa 1860, the garniture includes one large central jardinière flanked by two matching vases. Each piece rests on an ornate gilt bronze base with elephant-head feet and pierced gallery rims. The rectangular vessels are decorated on one side with hand-painted birds amid nests and reeds, and on the reverse with blooming roses and foliage. The richly detailed barbotine glazes, layered in tones of pink, green, gold, and umber over a deep mottled ground, reflect the refined artistry of the Vieux Paris porcelain tradition. Each vase is signed A. Patin on the facade and marked FB Paris, Saint-Denis on the underside for additional authentication. Although little is known about the artist A. Patin, his work aligns with mid-19th-century decorative porcelain painting from the Paris region, particularly the Saint-Denis ateliers celebrated for their richly enameled florals and naturalistic motifs. This period marked a flourishing of Vieux Paris artistry, when skilled decorators created vibrant, hand-painted works for the fashionable bourgeois interiors of the Second Empire. This rare three-piece ensemble is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, with brilliant colors and fine detail. A statement addition to any dining room, parlor, or entry console.
