About the Item

Planter presented at the Universal Exhibition, Paris, 1878, along with several other works on this theme, an extremely rare piece. An identical model is held in the Baccarat Museum's collections. At the 1878 Paris Expo, European designs based on Hokusai's depictions of carp gained further acclaim. Independently of each other, both Baccarat and Emile Gallé introduced glass vases embellished with koi carp motifs. Baccarat also developed a new engraving technique; 'la taillegravure' (tile engraving), allowing crystal to be deeply carved while giving the imprint the high relief, smoothness, and flexibility of line necessary for recreating such designs. Exhibitions: - Universal Exhibition, Paris, 1878 – The model of our vase was exhibited at this event. - Baccarat, the Legend of Crystal, Petit Palais, Paris, 2014 – The model of our vase and the preparatory drawing for its decoration were exhibited at this event.
