About the Item
A small yet sculpturally expressive planter by Bretby Art Pottery, model number 1616, produced in England during the 1930s. Reflecting the company’s distinctive take on Arts and Crafts-era design, this piece combines moulded industrial technique with the impression of organic spontaneity.
Formed in an oblong, softened oval shape with a collapsed profile and gently asymmetrical lines, the vessel features two lug handles at either end. Its body is finished in Bretby's signature bright green glaze, contrasted by a vivid glossy yellow interior—a colour pairing often used in the interwar period to highlight form and depth.
Stamped to the underside with the Bretby sunburst mark and model number 1616, the planter is made from slip-cast earthenware, likely moulded with some hand-finishing at the rims and handles. The design shows influence from earlier irregular forms pioneered by Bretby co-founder Henry Tooth, especially in its rejection of classical symmetry in favour of a more expressive, decorative surface.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks, only minor wear consistent with age. At nearly 100 years old, it remains a vivid example of British decorative ceramics from the early 20th century.

Green Opaline Jadeite Glass Trumpet Vase, Empoli Italy, 1960s
By Stelvia, Empoli
Located in Glasgow, GB
An elegant pale green opaline glass trumpet vase, attributed to Stelvia of Empoli, Italy, likely produced as part of the Opalina Fiorentina range, circa 1960s. This mid-century vase is a fine example of jadeite glass—a softly translucent type of opaline glassware popularised by Stelvia and echoed in the work of Murano glassmakers during the same period.
Handblown in mint green opaline glass, the vase features a classical trumpet silhouette: a flared conical body tapering into a rounded base, poised on a slender stem with a gently splayed foot. The opaline surface captures ambient light beautifully, producing a softly luminous, milky glow characteristic of the Stelvia opaline glass from this era.
Measuring 18 cm in height and 12 cm in diameter, the vase is in very good vintage condition. A single, pinpoint chip to the outer rim is visible only under close inspection and has been clearly documented in photographs. There are no cracks, repairs, or clouding to note.
It works beautifully as a standalone glass accent or grouped with other Italian opaline glass vessels in complementary pastel shades such as lilac, baby blue, or alabaster. A timeless piece for collectors of vintage Italian glassware...
