About the Item
This is a good cut-glass or crystal glass Jardiniere, Jar or open Vase with a thistle floral theme, which we attribute to Edinburgh Crystal, Scotland, Circa 1920.
The piece has been formed as an open topped Jar, with nominally vertical parallel sides and is made of solid glass. This is a quality piece and the glass has a thickness of about 0.5 inches at the base which tapers to about 5/16 inches at the top rim. The upper rim top has a chamfer either side and the outer base is rounded. It is heavy , weighing about 2.1 Kg.
The piece is hand cut with stylised circular thistles, stars and leaves, which have been formed within diamond and triangular shaped panels, cut continuously, in sections, all around the jar. The circular base is cut with a star burst to the underside. Overall this cutting produces a very decorative effect with light reflecting in many directions.
The stylised thistle decoration points to a Scottish maker and we attribute this piece to Edinburgh Crystal, who manufactured cut glass items in Scotland from c. 1820s to 2006. 1921 saw Thomas Webb and Sons Limited of Stourbridge, West Midlands, buy Edinburgh Crystal which continued to trade under its own name and in 2007 Waterford Wedgwood bought the Edinburgh Crystal company, Then, in January 2009, Waterford Wedgwood went into administration and the brand was discontinued.
