About the Item

Large French Art Deco Stoneware Planter by Denert Balichon (Denbac), France, 1910s — Model No. 122. This impressive large French Art Deco stoneware planter was created in the 1910s by Denert Balichon at their famed Denbac atelier in Vierzon, France. With its substantial scale and rich flamed glaze, it is one of the most sought-after examples of early 20th-century French stoneware. The planter is signed “Denbac” and numbered 122 under the base (see photos). It is illustrated in the Denbac catalogue, model #122, page 7, and represents the largest size produced for this model. Measurements • Height: 9.25 in (23.5 cm) • Diameter: 11.8 in (30 cm) A superb piece for collectors of Art Deco ceramics, French stoneware, and early Denbac production. About Denert Balichon (Denbac, Vierzon) The Denbac manufacture was founded in 1909 by René Denert (1872–1937). In 1910 he partnered with René-Louis Balichon, establishing one of France’s most innovative stoneware workshops of the early 20th century. The factory quickly became recognized for its flambé glazes with metallic reflections, a technique that made Denbac pieces instantly identifiable. Denbac specialized in high-fired stoneware, a natural clay fired at 1250–1350°C, producing vitrified, waterproof, and highly durable ceramics. The manufacture carried out extensive research on glazes, experimenting with combinations of more or less fusible enamels to achieve the remarkable colors, drips, and crystallizations that define Denbac’s iconic Art Nouveau and Art Deco surfaces. Each flamed stoneware piece is unique: variations in glaze thickness, temperature, and firing atmosphere create singular effects impossible to replicate exactly. Denbac produced a wide range of vases, planters, and sculptural decorative objects, sometimes in collaboration with sculptors. Its Art Nouveau forms, introduced in 1909, gave the production a sense of modernity, while its later Art Deco designs of the 1920s firmly positioned the Denbac name within the artistic movements of the time. Following the death of René Denert in 1937, René-Louis Balichon continued to manage the atelier. However, the company was unable to survive the disruptions of the Second World War, marking the end of Denbac’s remarkable production era.
