A both huge rare early 19th C. Thick terracotta Japanese vessel. Originally used for the storage of either alcohol, Soy or water by a wealthy family (clan marking engraved on front) . Due to the vessels utilitarian past it has developed a rich patina over the 200 + years of regular use.
