About the Item

Imposing serpentine marble vase, also called "Prato green." Rome, neoclassical period, first half of the 19th century. In the Neoclassical period Roman workshops produced fine marble pottery in imitation of ancient models; this one in particular was inspired by Egyptian models and made of serpentine marble, called Prato green because it was quarried a few miles from the Tuscan town of the same name. Green marble from Prato was widely used in Tuscany in medieval times to make the "zebra" facades of churches. Excellent state of conservation.
