About the Item

Palatial-Scale Rare Sèvres hand painted Porcelain and Ormolu Mounted Jardinière on Stand, Hand Painted with Maiden and Cupid Scenes, signed by the artist: “E. Collot” Raised Enamel and 24k gold Decoration, and Bronze Lion Mask Heads A monumental Sèvres style porcelain jardinière presented on its original substantial ormolu stand, notable for its commanding scale and balanced proportions. The porcelain bowl is formed with a broad ovoid body rising to a gently everted rim, enclosed by a pierced gilt bronze gallery. The exterior is hand painted with continuous pastoral figural scenes depicting beautiful reclining maidens attended by cupids within landscaped settings. One vignette shows a seated female figure beside a tree supporting a reclining companion draped in flowing garments, while winged cupids appear nearby in gentle interaction. Additional figures emerge among flowering shrubs, trees, and distant hills, arranged to follow the curvature of the vessel. The palette consists of soft flesh tones, pale blues, greens, and rose hues, with controlled shading defining facial features, limbs, and drapery folds. Beneath the rim, the painted scenes are bordered by raised enamel scrollwork with stylized floral motifs highlighted with restrained gilded accents. Encircling the lower portion of the bowl is an elaborate ormolu collar applied with projecting lion mask heads modeled in relief. Each mask is evenly spaced and aligned with the vertical supports below. From this collar descend four slender ormolu legs cast with linear ornament and terminating in paw feet. The legs are joined by a circular stretcher fitted with suspended garland swags arranged symmetrically between the supports, providing structural reinforcement while maintaining an open profile. The gilt bronze mounts display crisp casting and consistent hand chasing across the masks, foliage, and structural elements. The porcelain decoration shows confident brushwork with clear definition of figures and landscapes. The jardinière is signed by the artist “E. Collot” and bears a blue Sèvres porcelain mark. The combined height and breadth of the jardinière and stand give the ensemble a strong physical presence suitable for placement within a large interior setting. Circa 1880, Paris.
