Pair of 19th Century French Barbotine Cachepots with Bird and Floral Decor

About the Item

This pair of colorful, hand painted Majolica jardinières was sculpted in France, circa 1870. The antique planters are almost square in shape with scalloped decor around the edges. Each porcelain cachepot features exquisitely rendered hunt and floral motifs on all four sides. The scenes include guinea hen, wheat, flowers, leaves and tree branches. Both planters are in excellent condition, and decorated in a rich color palette with green, light beige, red and blue. These home accessories would make a great addition to a lodge, ranch or hunting resort. Probably Onnaing or L'Hermine a Orchies. La Faïencerie d’Onnaing in northern France was controlled by the Mouzin family in the second half of the 19th century. The pottery produced Majolica from 1870-1900. Clays were imported from England, Germany and Belgium to supplement local supplies and producing a ware that was somewhat lighter than that of other potteries. The color palette of glazes used at Onnaing was somewhat duller than competitors and was often applied in a haphazard manner. The two brothers L'Herminé Declercq, Emile and Joseph, set up a ceramic manufacture in Orchies (in Flanders), in 1886. Emile already owned a pottery factory in nearby Belgium, in the town of Rebaix, but wanted to expand his output through a joint venture with his brother. It is worth noting that Orchies was situated close to the famous ceramic centre of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux where the Moulin des Loups factory had been based since the 18th century. The company started producing Majolica at the end of the 19th century and by the early 1900s produced over twenty humorous Majolica jugs including modelled animals including cats, dogs, roosters, pigs and more rarely the braying donkey jug and squirrel jug. The company is only known to have produced few Toby jug designs depicting three quarter length rather than head and shoulder figures and these are hard to find today. This elegant colorful hand painted Majolica planter was sculpted in Montigny sur Loing, France, circa 1860. The ceramic jardinière with root shape handles features high relief soft pink, blue and beige rose flowers with pale green leaves, and brown and grey background. The ceramic vase is in good condition commensurate with age and use (minor chips on few petals). Impressionist ceramics term generally applies to "paint the slip" or "batch gouache". At the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the towns of Montigny-sur-Loing and Marlotte are many artists living places like Jean-Baptiste Corot, Eugène Thirion (1839-1910), Adrien Schulz (1851-1931), Numa Gillet (1868-1940) and Lucien Cahen-Michel (1888-1980), all attracted by the quality of the landscape and the light. When Eugene Schopin founded in 1872 a ceramics factory, he worked with the painters to create a range of designs inspired by Impressionism and decorated according to new public demands.
