About the Item

Patinated Bronze and Silver Inlayed Vessel or Hydria Bucket, Attributed to E.F. Caldwell A tall, tapering bronze body rises from a circular foot ring supported by three sculptural griffin-form legs. The surface carries a rich, dark patina that settles evenly across the body, giving depth to the metal while allowing the relief decoration to remain clearly defined. Around the upper register runs a sequence of applied ornamental bands, beginning with a braided border at the rim, followed by a wide frieze of evenly spaced pierced roundels. Each roundel encloses rosettes, scrolling foliage, and small animal motifs, while a narrower lower band presents a repeating tongue pattern that visually anchors the decoration. Hinged upright handles are mounted at the rim, secured by projecting female masks with braided hair and stylized headdresses, each flanked by star-shaped rosette roundels. Subtle silver and copper inlays appear within selected elements of the frieze, adding restrained contrast to the bronze surface. Below, the three griffin supports are modeled with upright torsos, outspread wings, and clawed feet, lifting the vessel with a sense of sculptural presence. Attribution to E.F. Caldwell rests on the close alignment of form, ornament, and construction with documented Caldwell bronze works, which frequently incorporate mythological supports, classical relief programs, and contrasting metal inlays within a patinated finish. No visible maker’s mark appears on the accessible surfaces. The overall profile corresponds to a hydria-type water vessel, reinforced by the hinged handles positioned at the rim. A closely related example is recorded in the historical photographic archive associated with Edizioni Brogi, showing a hydria in the Museo Nazionale in Naples, identified as decorated with copper and silver arabesques and associated with finds from Herculaneum. Key decorative features seen in that image, including the griffin feet, female mask handle attachments, and continuous roundel frieze, closely parallel the present vessel. Construction details reflect workshop practices associated with Caldwell production. Relief friezes appear cast in multiple sections and carefully joined, while the handles show thick-gauged casting with integrated hinge elements. The figural feet are separately cast and mechanically attached to the lower ring, creating a stable and unified base. The controlled use of silver and copper inlay within the relief, combined with a consistent patinated surface, places the vessel firmly within the tradition of classically inspired bronze furnishings produced for architectural and decorative interiors in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
