About the Item

Antique Moorish Hand-Etched Pewter Wedding Vessel or Urn, Late 19th–Early 20th Century A finely hand-crafted Moorish Revival ceremonial vessel in pewter or tinned copper, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century (circa 1880–1920). This Traditional North African and Islamic decorative art piece was likely used for wedding or domestic rituals, a practice rooted in Moroccan and broader Middle Eastern cultural traditions. The vessel’s elegant flared form with domed lid and finial reflects influences from Ottoman and Persian metalwork, while the intricate hand-etched floral and geometric motifs are hallmarks of Islamic craftsmanship, where abstraction and pattern take the place of figurative imagery. The stylized calligraphy visible around the neck may represent a blessing or dedication, often inscribed on ceremonial wedding urns. Such vessels were traditionally used for: Wedding or dowry ceremonies, holding sweets, rosewater, or perfumes offered to guests. Hospitality rituals, as part of Orientalist-influenced North African domestic customs. Storage of valuables or symbolic offerings, their rich ornamentation signifying prosperity and devotion. This antique Islamic and Moorish Revival decorative vessel embodies the refined artistry of 19th-century Moroccan metalwork, where craftsmanship met cultural symbolism. The even pewter oxidation and subtle patina attest to its authenticity and age of over a century. We have preserved the vessel’s natural aged finish, emphasizing its genuine history and tactile beauty. Dimensions: 7" H × 5 1/4" Diameter Material: Pewter or tinned copper alloy Origin: Morocco or broader North Africa Period: Late 19th to early 20th century Condition: Excellent antique condition with expected surface wear and rich, even patina; see photos for details.
