About the Item
Blue John, or Derbyshire Spar is a rare semi precious stone and the only variety of fluorite to possess qualities significant enough to classify it as a gemstone. Mined from the Blue John and Cliff Cavern mines in Derbyshire England, it was extremely popular with royalty and the nobility in the 18th, and early 19th Centuries.
This Neoclassical style urn from the Regency period exhibits the purple and crystalline veining, considered to be the best quality and most desirable stone.
Sitting atop a black Ashford marble base, the urn is mounted with ormolu cast bronze rams heads
