About the Item

FREE WORLDWIDE SHIPPING PAIR OF LATE 19TH CENTURY FRENCH ONYX AND CHAMPLEVÉ URNS WITH ORMOLU MOUNTS ATTRIBUTED TO BARBEDIENNE From our Decorative collection, we are pleased to offer this pair of French champlevé enamel and onyx urns firmly attributed to Ferdinand Barbedienne. Dating to the late 19th century during the Belle Époque period, circa 1875, the urns are composed of fine quality onyx bodies mounted with richly decorated ormolu and enamel. Each urn features a classic tapered form with waisted midsection carved from a warm-toned onyx. The mounts are cast in gilt bronze and inlaid with polychrome champlevé enamel in tones of deep blue, white, red and turquoise, forming intricate borders and foliate motifs. The enamelled stems rise to flared feet and are flanked by prominent looped handles with chased detailing, typical of high-end decorative work from the period. The design, quality and execution allow a firm attribution to the Barbedienne foundry, one of the most celebrated French bronziers of the 19th century. Barbedienne was renowned for his collaborations with leading artists and for producing objets d’art of exceptional design, often incorporating hard stones, enamel and elaborate gilded mounts.
