About the Item
An Italian Neoclassical 19th Century Grand Tour Period Patinated Bronze Rhyton with Winged Horse on Marble Base. The Rhyton is shaped as a curved horn rising from a winged horse and mounted on a hexagonal marble base. The upper rim is formed with a flared border carrying a repeated leaf pattern and a narrow beaded band. Below this, the horn displays smooth panels interrupted by relief figures of draped women spaced evenly around the surface. The lower section transitions into closely set vertical flutes that follow the curvature of the horn until it meets the body of the horse. The reverse shows the full sweep of the horn form, and the underside of the marble base reveals the central mounting bolt that secures the bronze to the stone.
The winged horse forms the structural and visual support for the rhyton. Its body is presented in a seated posture with the forelegs extended forward and the head inclined downward. The mane is arranged as a row of rounded segments, while the wings extend outward with layered feathering. The head includes curved horns, rounded ears, and a defined muzzle. The horse sits on a group of large curling leaves that rise from the marble plinth, creating a sculptural base that integrates the animal figure with the horn above it. The entire bronze surface carries a consistent patinated finish that emphasizes the molded lines and contours. This example follows the Grand Tour tradition of adapting classical shapes documented in Roman metalwork, terracotta rhyta, and mythological animal imagery. The relief female figures, fluted horn body, and fully modeled horse reflect a clear engagement with ancient prototypes. The substantial size and weight align with other Grand Tour bronzes produced for travelers seeking decorative interpretations of classical forms. The combination of patinated bronze, sculpted leaf base, and variegated marble platform is consistent with workshop production aimed at creating collectible objects based on archaeological sources.
