About the Item

This very early example of Art Deco artisanry, dating from around 1917 just before Josef Ekberg left the Gustavsberg porcelain works in Sweden, is richly decorated with leaping gazelles accompanied by stylized clouds of gold superimposed over a densely-patterned background. The early date of this urn reminds us that both France and Sweden developed streamlined and stylized approaches to Classicism in the 1910s and 20s, well before Art Deco became a worldwide phenomenon. Ekberg worked at Gustavsberg from 1889 to 1917, and is known for his contributions to the Swedish Grace movement, which was just featured by a major exhibition at the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm. The urn is signed and marked on the bottom.
