About the Item
This striking large pair of neoclassical urn-form planters, dating to circa 1940"s, is attributed to Pierre Lottier, a French designer active in the mid-20th century. The pair reflects the period’s continued engagement with classical forms, reinterpreted through a modern decorative sensibility characteristic of postwar French design.
Executed in a black lacquered finish with parcel-gilt detailing, each planter features a fluted body, raised rim, and stepped square base, resulting in a bold architectural presence. The restrained palette emphasizes form and proportion, while the generous scale lends the pair a sculptural, almost monumental quality.
Pierre Lottier was a cosmopolitan figure within French artistic and literary circles and is known to have been a companion and lover of Jean Cocteau, placing him within one of the most influential creative milieus of the 20th century. Later in his career, Lottier relocated to Spain, where he worked as a designer and decorator, including the celebrated interior of the Barcelona residence of Ava Gardner. His work is distinguished by its synthesis of classical inspiration and mid-century elegance, bridging traditional ornament with modern restraint.
Likely produced for use as interior planters or decorative jardinières, this pair exemplifies the French tradition of ornamental furnishings that balance classicism and early mid-century design. Their versatility, strong silhouette, and refined detailing make them well suited to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
