About the Item

Pair of Maison Jansen–Style Porcelaine de Paris Covered Urns with Gilt Feather Decoration, France, c. 1940–1960 The set consists of four pieces two lids and two vases Dimensions: 13" H × 7.5" Dia × 5.5" Base Diameter This refined pair of French Porcelaine de Paris covered urns exemplifies the glamorous neoclassical revival style embraced by Maison Jansen during the mid-20th century. Each urn is crafted in brilliant hard-paste porcelain and decorated with a dramatic hand-gilded feather motif, executed in matte and burnished gold to create subtle texture, shading, and movement across the white porcelain ground. The elongated plume—stylized yet meticulously engraved—recalls the opulent ornament favored by Jansen in their interiors for European aristocracy and American high-style clients. The sweeping curves of the baluster form, the domed lids with flame finials, and the gilt banding at the rim and foot further enhance the classical silhouette. The luxurious gilding appears to be applied using a combination of burnished gold leaf and sgraffito tooling, techniques associated with Paris porcelain decoration since the 19th century and continued in the ateliers producing for Porcelaine de Paris throughout the 20th century. Age • Mid-20th century, circa 1945–1960 • Consistent with Porcelaine de Paris production for Maison Jansen–influenced interiors Condition • One urn has a small interior rim chip that was reattached; it is not visible when the lid is in place and does not affect display. • Otherwise excellent condition with crisp gilding and clean, bright porcelain. Stylistic Notes These urns perfectly illustrate the refined restraint and decorative glamour associated with Jansen: crisp white porcelain, bold single-motif decoration, and rich gold accents capable of elevating both traditional and contemporary interiors. They display beautifully as mantle garniture, console accents, or paired on a commode.
