About the Item

A significant pair of antique French Empire style gilt bronze and green marble military urns. Each urn in this magnificent and unique pair showcases a tall, baluster-shaped body crafted from dark green marble featuring beautiful white and grey veining. They are elegantly set atop a stepped square plinth base made of the same matching marble, adorned with gilt bronze edging. The foot rises from a circular gilt bronze mount decorated with a leaf-tip border, leading to a rounded marble socle and an acanthus-cast gilt bronze lower body. Around the midsection, gilt bronze mounts depict classical military and allegorical scenes in relief, including draped female figures and architectural elements. The necks bear medallions with two profile busts framed by laurel wreaths, surmounted by a band of gilt bronze gadrooning. The twin handles are formed as elongated gilt bronze swan-neck scrolls terminating in crested helmets at the rim, the surfaces chased with feather and foliate patterns. The wide, flared mouths have a plain interior and are edged with a band of alternating oval and flat reserves. The green marble surfaces provide a contrasting background to the detailed gilt bronze ornamentation, which is applied in high relief. These urns are designed in the French Empire style, reflecting the period’s interest in classical antiquity and military themes.
