About the Item

The superb pair of urns is formed in the classical Empire style, dating to the Empire period, and constructed in gilt bronze and patinated bronze. Each featuring a shallow, rounded body supported on a square plinth base. The urns are executed in dark patinated bronze, with the bowls decorated in bold gadrooning around the body and raised on a short stem adorned with acanthus-leaf motifs. The wide mouths are framed by elaborate gilt bronze handles, extending outward in scrolling forms terminating in stylized masks. The bases are structured in stepped sections, with a central black plinth bordered above and below with applied gilt bronze friezes, the upper with a wreath of fruit and foliage, and the lower with a continuous palmette pattern. The contrast between the dark surfaces of the bowls and the gilded decorative elements is characteristic of Empire-era bronzework. The crisp chasing and casting of the ornamentation, along with the precise application of the gilding, reflect the technical standards of French bronze workshops of the early 1800s. No signatures are visible in the present state, though the design and execution align with the work of leading Parisian bronziers of the period. French bronze workshops of the Empire era, particularly those working under designers such as Pierre-Philippe Thomire, were known for producing urns, vases, and tazzas of this type. The combination of patinated surfaces with contrasting gilt elements was favored for interior decoration in neoclassical settings, with motifs often drawn from antiquity. The square plinth construction, palmette borders, and scrolling gilt handles are consistent with the ornamental vocabulary of French bronzework of the period, situating this pair within the broader decorative production of the Empire style.
