About the Item

An exquisite pair of palatial large antique Italian neoclassical carved alabaster urns. Each urn is constructed in a tall baluster form rising from square plinth bases. The urns feature wide, flaring rims tapering to slender necks, which transition into full, rounded bodies. The bodies are carved in relief with classical masks framed by grapevine wreaths, a detail consistent with neoclassical decorative motifs. Below, the bodies taper into gadrooned lower sections that continue into circular socle bases. Each urn is mounted on a tall square alabaster pedestal with a stepped plinth and molded edge. The alabaster surfaces display natural veining and tonal variations ranging from creamy ivory to soft amber. The urns are Italian in origin and carved from solid alabaster, a material often employed for large-scale decorative pieces during the neoclassical period. Their design reflects the influence of ancient Roman prototypes, with the inclusion of classical masks and symmetrical ornament. The scale of the urns, enhanced by their integral pedestals, emphasizes their intended role as statement objects in an interior or architectural setting. No signatures or inscriptions are visible on the surfaces. Italian alabaster carving was centered primarily in Volterra and Florence, where workshops specialized in producing decorative urns, vases, and architectural ornaments. Large-scale alabaster works such as these required blocks of significant size and uniformity, a factor contributing to their rarity. The combination of mask reliefs, fluted lower bodies, and pedestal mounts is consistent with the neoclassical idiom popular in Italy during the late 18th and 19th centuries. These urns stand as substantial examples of Italian alabaster carving, illustrating both material choice and design rooted in classical revival traditions.
