About the Item

This ambitious, elongated urn with elaborate handles and a sunburst lid is beautifully decorated with perch on one side and angelfish on the other, all in tones of black, charcoal and slate blue-gray edged in gold. The vase is an excellent example of the Art Deco porcelains designed by Gunnar Nylund in what he called a "flambe" glaze: rich browns or blue-grays highlighted with gold. Nylund worked at the famed Rorstrand porcelain works in Sweden from 1931-1958; and in his later years he became known for his organic forms and mottled glazes. The vase is well marked with the artist's name and the decorator's name (Olson) on the bottom.
