About the Item
This large wooden mortar dates to the late 19th century and was originally used for crushing rice, grain, spices and other foodstuffs. Carved from a single tree trunk, the mortar has a smoothly worn interior bowl and a faceted exterior textured by blade marks, chisel notches and the irregular wear of antique wood. Splits along the wood grain add to the mortar's storied character and a soft, burnished patina reflects its age and use. Darkened to a deep brown, the large rice mortar is ideal today as an unexpected catch-all or a rustic cachepot for houseplants.
