About the Item
Small Spanish Colonial Neoclassical Ceramic Urn. Two handles with lion heads and cherub details. Made in Peru circa 1640.
A rare and early Spanish Colonial glazed ceramic urn, made in Peru circa 1640. This expressive vessel is modeled in a Neoclassical form with twin handles emerging from stylized lion heads and is richly decorated in high relief with putti and Bacchi motifs, including grape clusters and vine scrolls. The deep green lead glaze has developed an organic, mottled patina over centuries of use and exposure, with the interior showing warm ochre tones.
Raised on a pedestal foot, the urn is entirely hand-formed and speaks to the merging of European classical design with indigenous Peruvian craftsmanship during the early colonial period. Its authenticity and restorations are visible, adding to its authenticity and charm. A sculptural and historically significant piece, ideal as a decorative accent or collector's object.
