About the Item

A bold and sculptural cased glass vase designed by Jerzy Słuczan-Orkusz and produced by Tarnowiec Glassworks, Poland, during the 1980s. This piece reflects a distinctly postmodern reinterpretation of the classical amphora, combining historical form with the optical clarity and colour play of studio art glass from the late 20th century. The vase is crafted in aubergine-purple blown glass, cased in a thick layer of clear glass that amplifies its depth and silhouette. The interior is lined in opaque white, revealed most clearly at the wide flared rim — a feature that adds contrast and visual balance. Flanking the neck are two sweeping clear glass handles, each terminating in subtle spiral tips — a stylised reference to Greco-Roman volute motifs, reimagined through a distinctly postmodern lens. Standing approximately 36.5 cm tall with a diameter of 18 cm, this piece functions as both decorative glassware and sculptural form. It embodies the artistic experimentation taking place in Polish glass design during the 1980s, where traditional craft met the emerging aesthetics of the Memphis movement, modernism, and geometric abstraction. The vase remains in good vintage condition with only minor surface wear. A striking presence in any setting, and a strong representative of collectible studio glass from a designer of note.
