About the Item

A beautifully rounded Qing Dynasty peach-blossom glazed brush washer, dating to the Daoguang-Xianfeng period (circa 1830-1850). This small scholar's object is a classic example of the refined ceramic culture surrounding the Chinese literati studio, where such pieces were used for washing and diluting ink brushes. The glaze is a true peach-blossom (taohong) tone-an atmospheric blend of deep mulberry, soft rose, and violet mottling, achieved through controlled copper-red firing. The surface shows the distinctive speckling and depth associated with 19th-century kilns, with subtle pooling around the foot and rim. The interior rim displays expected 19th-century firing lines and age-appropriate wear. The unglazed foot shows good kiln grit, oxidation, and patina consistent with period examples. Objects of this type were prized as part of a scholar's desk display, appreciated not only for their function but for their contemplative color and tactile form. This is an excellent, authentic Qing scholar object-small, elegant, and rich with the soft, atmospheric character collectors look for.
