This exceptional pair of 19th century Vases de Demoiselle, also known as male Çanakkale vessels, is handcrafted in terracotta and finished with a striking green glaze. These anthropomorphic pitchers originated in Turkey and were traditionally used to hold rose essence, prized for its fragrance and symbolic value.
Each vase is sculpted with expressive facial features and adorned with applied rosettes, floral motifs, and decorative elements, showcasing the artisanal character of Çanakkale pottery. Twisted side handles and fitted lids further enhance their sculptural presence.
While these vessels are most commonly found in brown or white glazes, examples exported to Provence were often finished in richer hues such as green, yellow, or purple, making this pair particularly distinctive and desirable.
