About the Item

This hand-decorated ceramic vase was produced in Torquay, England, and stands 10 inches tall with a classic ovoid form and slightly flared rim. The vase is finished in a rich cobalt-blue glaze and features a finely painted kingfisher, a bird native to the rivers and waterways of Devon, depicted in flight amid stylized foliage and berries. We believe this vase is from the 1920s to the 1930s as the hand-painted bird motif (kingfisher) and naturalistic subject matter are typical of interwar Torquay art pottery. The rich blue ground with free, confident brushwork aligns with Torquay wares produced between WWI and WWII. Additionally, unglazed terracotta base and rim are consistent with early 20th-century Torquay production and earlier Victorian Torquay pieces tend to be more tightly rendered; later mid-century examples often show simplified or more graphic decoration Condition: Very good vintage condition with minor surface wear consistent with age and use. No chips or cracks observed.
