About the Item
From Tohoku area, Japan.
This Cha Tsubo, pottery Jar for tea leaf stoage - is a product of late Edo to Meiji era (estimate 1860s-1910) estimate from the style
condition.
The surface is reinforced by the layered Washi (traditional Japanese paper), stained
coated with persimmon tannin
Urushi lacquer, it gives extra sturdiness
water proofing to the pot.
Washi layers are almost conbined together with pottery by the age, having unique wabi sabi texture on it.
The lid is made from iron wire and Washi, probably added in later era (usually Cha-Tsubo's opening is usually just covered with several papers and tied with ropes).
The size is ideal for using as a vase, but I haven't checked the water leaking of this piece, to keep the paper coat in better condition.
I recommend to put smaller water container inside when using as a vase.
