About the Item

Carlo Scarpa (1906- 1978) was an Italian architect and designer heavily influenced by the history of Venetian culture, materials and landscape. in 1926 obtained his diploma of Professor in Architectural Drawing at the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Venice. He then began his career at the Royal Superior Institute of Architecture of Venice (successively Architectural Institute of Venice University) as assistant to Prof. G. Cirilli. He possessed an exceptional understanding of raw materials, and from 1933 to 1947, was artistic director of Venini-one of the most prominent producers of Venetian glass before he began the pursuit of his career as an architect. Scarpa's architecture manages to respect the old and historic while simultaneously introducing new and modern design details. In this respect his work is deeply sensitive to the changes of time, all taking shape in a careful selection and combination of materials. Very beautiful and rare mine vase in corroded glass with multiple colored layers, designed by Carlo Scarpa fo Venini in 1936. In very good condition, fully original and ready to be shipped. Published in: Marino Barovier, Carlo Scarpa Venini 1932-47, Skira, Milan, 2012, p. 215 We recommend a wooden crate for shipping to prevent glass damage.

20th Century Carlo Scarpa Venini Lattimo Vase "a Mezza Filigrana", 50s
By Venini, Carlo Scarpa
Located in Turin, Turin
In 1921 Venini and Cappellin opened a glass factory called Vetri Soffiati Muranesi Cappellin Venini & C. on the islands of Murano, the historic glass production centre in the lagoon of Venice, Italy. With Luigi Ceresa and Emilio Hochs as investors, they arranged to purchase the recently closed Murano glass factory of Andrea Rioda, hire the former firm's glassblowers, and retain Rioda himself to serve as technical director of the venture. Venini embarked on collaborations with architects and designers such as Cini Boeri, Tomaso Buzzi, Gio Ponti, Carlo Scarpa, Ettore Sottsass, Tapio Wirkkala, Gae Aulenti, and Massimo Vignelli. The ethos was to "take the Murano tradition of glass blowing and combine it with the French fashion industry's tradition of using designers". Here you can see a small lattimo vase "a mezza filigrana" realized by Venini on Carlo Scarpa...
