About the Item

This beautifully proportioned South Italian ceramic production is an askos, or pouring vessel.  It prominently features a seated naked winged Eros wearing anklets, bracelets, a body chain, a necklace and earrings. His hair bound up, holding a laden phiale and rosette chain in his raised right hand, and a wreath in his left. Large scrolling palmettes are rendered under the handle and on the sides, wiht band of wave below and band of dotted ovolo around neck. Highlighted details in are added in white and yellow throughout. Provenance Jacques Errera collection, 19th Century, Belgium. Thence by descent. Antiquities Christie's London, October 24, 2012.   • Condition:
    Repaired: Repaired from multiple fragments with infill and overpainting along the repair lines. Some lost sections have been restored with plain terracotta coloured infill. Wear consistent with age and use. Section of black painted restoration just behind the rocky outcrop he sits on and also to this side of the wreath in his hand. Other restored sections over the palmettes on both sides. Foot with heavy flaked chips. Handle and neck repaired.
