About the Artist: André Baud (1903–1986) André Baud is considered one of the most important French ceramists of the postwar Vallauris movement. Born in 1903 in Gironde, he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bourges (Grand Prize for Ceramics, 1923) and continued at the École des Arts Appliqués in Paris. Before settling in Vallauris, he worked in numerous ceramics workshops and exhibited regularly at major salons such as the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs, and the Salon d’Automne. In 1942, Baud and his wife Micheline established their workshop and boutique in Vallauris. Alongside contemporaries Robert Picault, Roger Capron, and Suzanne Ramié (Madoura), he played a central role in the renaissance of Vallauris pottery. In 1946, the group organized the first pottery exhibition at the Nérolium, the precursor to the Biennale Internationale de la Céramique d’Art de Vallauris. Baud’s work is recognized for its pure, modern forms, often finished in matte black or white exteriors paired with vibrant interior glazes. His graphic motifs draw on cosmic themes, botanical elements, and abstract geometry. In addition to his studio practice, he was deeply committed to promoting the ceramics profession, serving as president of the Vallaurian Association for Ceramic Expansion (AVEC) from 1959 to 1962. Over his career, André Baud received numerous distinctions, including: • Vermeil Medal, International Exhibition Albisola (1958) • Silver Medal, Exhibition of Arts and Crafts Techniques, Paris (1961) • Gold Medal, Ceramics Festival, Albisola (1963) • Multiple honorary diplomas in France and abroad (1963–1969) Baud remains a key figure in the history of French mid-century ceramics, celebrated for his technical rigor, artistic sensitivity, and defining contribution to the Vallauris tradition.
