About the Item
French Art Deco Berluze Vase by André Delatte, 1920s – Double-Layer Mottled Glass
This striking French Art Deco single-flower “berluze” vase by André Delatte (Jarville, near Nancy), dating from the late 1920s, is an exceptional example of refined Art Deco glassmaking. Its elegant elongated silhouette and narrow mouth were designed to highlight a single stem, making it an icon of minimal yet luxurious French decorative arts.
Crafted in mottled double-layer glass, the vase features enameled decoration applied between the two layers, a technique characteristic of Delatte’s finest work and prized by collectors for its depth, luminosity, and technical mastery.
Height: 18.7 in. (47.5 cm)
Diameter: 5.8 in. (14.8 cm)
Signature: “A. Delatte Nancy” (see photo)
This piece captures the spirit of the École de Nancy while reflecting the sleek, modern lines that defined late-1920s French Art Deco design.
About André Delatte (1887–1953)
A contemporary of Daum and Gallé, André Delatte established his glassworks in Jarville, near Nancy, where he produced high-quality cameo, acid-etched, and double-layer glass. His studio favored bold colors, innovative surface treatments, and dynamic mottled effects—features that have made Delatte’s pieces highly sought after by collectors of early 20th-century French decorative arts.
About David Guéron (Atelier Degue) – For Context in French Art Deco Glass
Although not the creator of this vase, David Guéron, founder of Atelier Degue, was another major figure of Parisian Art Deco glassmaking. Originally from Turkey and later established in France, Guéron became known for the bold geometric forms and richly colored opaline and acid-etched glass that defined the Degue aesthetic. His work was featured extensively in prestigious venues, including the interiors of famed French transatlantic ocean liners such as the legendary SS Normandie. On these ships—which symbolized French luxury and technological innovation—Guéron contributed lighting and decorative glass that showcased the sophistication of Art Deco design on an international stage.
This connection to the Art Deco grand-tradition of ocean-liner décor places the present Delatte vase within the broader narrative of French decorative arts at their peak, a period when designers pushed the boundaries of modern luxury.
